I recently got more into listening to Japanese music. It was really hard for me to know where to start, since Japanese music is getting more popular in America and I had gotten so many recommendations! That’s why I’ve created this guide to my top recommendations for different genres of music!
Pop: Ayumi Hamasaki
If you want to get into Japanese music, Ayumi Hamasaki is the place to start. She’s the best selling Japanese solo artist ever. In her almost 25 year long career, she has managed to keep each new release fresh and exciting.

Rock: The Oral Cigarettes
You might recognize the opening riff from The Oral Cigarettes, “Kyouran Hey Kids!!”, since it got some traction on TikTok recently. The band utilizes catchy beats and upbeat rhythms that are impossible to stop listening to.

Arashi enjoys the same long time fame that Ayumi Hamasaki does. While the boy band has been famous since the early 2000s, they are still one of the most famous Japanese boy bands. While the band is currently on Hiatus, there is plenty of back catalog for you to enjoy!

Girl Band: Baby Metal
Baby Metal is everything I have ever needed from a Japanese girl group. They’re kawaii, hardcore, talented musicians who know how to captivate an audience. They’re influential enough to have inspired girls across Japan to emulate their fashion. I credit them with bringing metal to the younger generation of Japanese people!
