One of the most important (arguably the most important!) aspects of visiting a foreign country or place is trying out the foods available to that region! This naturally applies to Japan as well, so today, I’ll be telling you about the most well received and highly recommended dishes of Japan.
This list was compiled after parsing through numerous websites regarding Japanese cuisine, and the dishes found here were recommended by every website that was browsed! Rest assured, for this is a very credible source!
Sushi

Sushi is, as many of you know, a very broad term referring to a dish that generally contains vegetables and seafood wrapped in vinegar-ed sushi rice and dried seaweed. Of course, it certainly isn’t limited to vegetables or seafood, but the sushi rice is a must!
Sashimi

Sashimi and sushi are mixed up as they both often use seafood, but sashimi actually refers to thinly sliced fish (and also meat) and has nothing to do with rice! Sashimi is often consumed with soy sauce.
Miso shiru/Miso soup

Another well known dish, Miso shiru is a soup composed of dashi stock and miso paste, and it is often enjoyed with a serving of rice. Interesting tidbit: If someone asks you, “Will you make me miso soup every morning?” know that replying with a “yes” is tantamount to accepting a proposal of marriage!
Udon

Udon comes in various forms, depending on the ingredients as well as the way of serving (stir fry, in noodle soups/hot, and cold), but any type of udon dish will continue thick, chewy noodles made from wheat flour.
Soba

Like udon, soba is made of buckwheat flour and can be consumed hot in noodle soups or cold with a chilled dipping sauce. Cold soba is often eaten as a snack in the summer!
Yakitori

Yakitori translates to grilled chicken, and it is aptly named as it is a dish in which pieces of grilled chicken (and vegetables), glazed with a sauce of some type, often containing soy sauce, rice wine, sake, and sugar, are skewered through with “teppogushi,” or “gun skewers”!
Before we finish up, here are some other honorable mentions!
Unagi no Kabayaki Okonomiyaki Tonkatsu
Fried eel Savory pancake (literally Pork cutlet
“what you like cooked”)
Ramen Yakisoba Gyoza
I’m sure you know this one! Fried soba Japanese dumplings
Oden Takoyaki Japanese Curry
Nabemono/one-pot dish Grilled octopus balls Meat and vegetables served
with rice
And that brings us to a close! I hope you get a chance to visit Japan and try these delicious foods! And if I made you feel hungry for Japanese food, gomen nasai! (But don’t worry, I suffer with you!)
