Yu-Gi-Oh: OCG

JSA

Updated: Mar 23, 2022

One of my fondest memories in fifth grade was playing Yu-Gi-Oh with my classmates. It was a really big thing back then, we played them during class and had tag team tournaments with people from other classes. However, the cards we used were fake Chinese cards with ridiculously outrageous effects.

Some of the fake cards included God cards with unlimited ATK/DEF (it wasn’t uncommon to have Exodia and God cards battle each other) and Millennium Item Magic cards. I recall that by sending the seven items into the Graveyard allows you to summon some Tablet monster with unlimited ATK/DEF.

Needless to say, those were some lawless and chaotic times, but as kids, we had fun.

It wasn’t until I had more disposable income, was I able to afford OCG cards.

The OCG in Yu-Gi-Oh stands for Official Card Game, and is mainly played in Asian countries such as Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Taiwan, and mainland China. A total of five kinds of OCG cards were printed, with three still in circulation: Japanese, Korean, and simplified Chinese. Asian English and traditional Chinese have been discontinued.

Under the Japanese category are two subcategories: “Japanese paper 日紙” and “Korean paper韓紙”, referring to the different kinds of paper the cards were printed on. Due to their glossy touch and better colors, “Japanese paper” cards are usually more expensive.

Yu-Gi-Oh TCG, Trading Card Game, is mainly played in Northern American and European countries, and is different from OCG in a number of ways. Cards with weapons, religious symbols, and nudity are heavily censored in the TCG version, TCG and OCG have separate lists of cards banned from official tournaments, and TCG cards have later release dates.

Some examples below:

The card “Revolver Dragon” had its name changed to “Barrel Dragon” and guns modified in the TCG card art.

The hexagram in the card “Spellbinding Circle” was replaced in TCG with a different symbol.

The card Cyberdark End Dragon was released in OCG in May 2021 while the TCG version was released in October 2021.

Next I’m just gonna flex some of my favorite OCG cards in my collection

These are the decks I use (from left to right and top to bottom): Ancient Gear, Cyber Dragon, AtoZ Union, Malefic/Sin, and Cyberdark. I haven’t updated these decks with them new Pendulum or Link monsters, so these decks are pretty much outdated by 2021 standards.

Super rare Shadow Ghoul and Zora in Series 1 layouts:

Ultimate rare Number C96: Dark Storm, Kaiba Corp Ultra rare Blue Eyes White Dragon, and Ultra rare Number 107: Galaxy-Eyes Tachyon Dragon:

So yeah, hopefully you had fun reading this post, and I’m totally down if you ever wanna duel!
